WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Provides high quality breastfeeding education and support to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants per Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BPC) program guidelines. Keeps accurate, timely and confidential documentation of contacts. Properly maintains BPC program equipment. Provides support to BPC program volunteers. Contributes to the agency goals of increasing the rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration among WIC participants.
Performs all duties and responsibilities in compliance with standard operating procedures and other Federal, State and local regulations
Work Schedule and Location: Normal hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. including some Saturdays and evenings; flexible schedule as approved by supervisor. Depending on need, may be asked to work at various Red Cross WIC locations in San Diego County.
WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE GOOD
1. Provides breastfeeding education and support to participants who wish to participate in the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BPC) program. 99%
2. Maintains a determined caseload of BPC participants.
3. Develops relationships and communicates with BPC participants by phone, text, and email, and at WIC clinic visits and support groups.
4. Gives basic information about normal breastfeeding to pregnant and new mothers.
5. Refers BPC participants to the WIC lactation consultant and others, per protocol.
6. Keeps accurate and confidential records of all contacts made with BPC participants.
7. Is available to BPC participants by phone/text during specified hours, including some after business hours. Carries out any additional assignments required to fulfill the mission of the American Red Cross and WIC. 1%
Complies with all fiscal and operational requirements prescribed by the American Red Cross and the State WIC Branch, including those outlined in the Red Cross employee handbook.
Scope: Continue learning aspects of the job. Work on task-oriented assignments. Contact primarily within immediate work unit.
Pay Information: The salary range for this position is (CA): $17.33-$18.48.

Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role.
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Current certification to be an instructor in discipline desired; training and certification provided to qualified candidates after hire. Once certified must maintain applicable level course certifications.
Experience: 1 year of related experience preferred. Related experience includes education, adult training or service industry. Basic computer skills and demonstrated ability to utilize Microsoft Office and other applicable software applications required. Experience in using audio-visual technology for education delivery.
Management Experience: N/A
Skills and Abilities: Strong presentation skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Ability to communicate course material in a clear and understandable manner. Customer Service skills. Ability to teach effectively in an adult learning environment. Valid driver's license preferred. Access to reliable transportation to training sites. Flexible schedule required during day, evening or weekends. Ability to work on a team.
Travel: Must be able to travel regionally. A current, valid driver's license with good driving record is required.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to use fingers to grasp, move and manipulate small objects. The employee must use the stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must have the ability to speak clearly so listeners can understand and understand the speech of another person. The work environment will consist of moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phones and printers, light traffic). The employee must have the ability to work in a small cubicle and have the ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
