Essential Job Duties

Join the Building Maintenance and Operations (BM&O) team as an Assistant Maintenance Technician, where you’ll play a key role in supporting the maintenance, operation, and repair of essential campus facilities. Assigned to a zone maintenance shop on either NC State’s Original Campus, Centennial Campus, or CBC (Veterinary School) campuses, you will help maintain HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to ensure a safe and functional environment across campus. This entry-level role is ideal for individuals looking to build their skills offering hands-on experience and guidance.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct routine maintenance, operations, and repair tasks across HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within the assigned zone
  • Perform basic repairs, such as fixing leaks, adjusting boiler levels, assisting with pipe installations, and completing preventive maintenance (PM) tasks to ensure system functionality and campus safety
  • Support skilled technicians in maintenance activities, gaining practical experience in various trade skills
  • Inspect facilities regularly to identify issues, report needed repairs, and provide detailed updates to senior technicians or supervisors
  • Follow and enforce established safety protocols, including system isolation and lock-out procedures, to maintain a safe working environment
  • Record equipment readings for boilers and chillers, report any discrepancies, and document findings accurately in maintenance logs
  • Monitor and check chemical levels as assigned, ensuring compliance with operational standards

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Some knowledge or understanding of the maintenance or building system trades
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and the general public, as well as the ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and other communications related to work assignments and other matters
  • Able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the maintenance or building system trades in a university setting
  • Some experience in HVAC, steam, plumbing, and electrical trades

Required License or Certification

  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
