Summary:
The Extension Outreach Director will work under the supervision of the Vice President of Instruction to carry out the mission, the philosophy, and the purposes of the Oglala Lakota
College. The Agriculture Extension Director is responsible for coordinating communitybased educational activities for the general population of Oglala Lakota College’s current service area. Community-based educational activities conducted by this position will be in the form of workshops, seminars, or one-on-one trainings as needed by the community
clients to meet their individual needs related to agriculture or community development. (All
trainings conducted are non-college credit and cannot be transferred to college credit if requested by clients as per Federal Extension Educational guidelines of the 1914 the SmithLever Act (page 4 of The Land Grant Tradition: https://www.aplu.org/library/the-land-granttradition/file ). Therefore, this position is not allowed to instruct any college credited classes during normal staff working hours.) The individual will be responsible for managing USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) grants, budgets and reporting.
Job Duties:
1. Implement and manage grants and budgets including NIFA Ag Extension and other grants awarded and assigned.
2. Follow OLC’s Institutional Effectiveness plan and process.
3. Coordinate and provide workshops on all areas of agriculture.
4. Work with the community on agricultural education projects.
5. Recruit staff, consultants and participants for workshops and projects.
6. Write or assist with grant proposals in the areas of agriculture especially NIFA
Extension, Research and Extension Special Emphasis grants.
7. Work with Tribal, state extension programs, as well as other entities on Food Sovereignty and other agriculture-related issues.
8. Research and disseminate the latest knowledge and techniques for gardening, farming, ranching (cattle and bison).
9. Coordinate extension efforts with NIFA Tribal College Equity Grant and New Beginnings grants.
10. Supervise personnel
11. Coordinate and oversee Wazi Paha Oyate Festival
12. Completion of reports and other grant reports as applicable.
13. Fulfill all other duties as assigned and required by supervisor.
Qualifications:
1. Doctorate or Master’s Degree in Agriculture (or related field of science/education) preferred. Bachelor of Arts/Science in Agriculture (or related field of science/education) required.
2. Experienced working with people on training activities related to agriculture and/or youth.
3. Experience working with budgeting and reporting.
4. Demonstrated ability to organize and plan community-based training workshops, seminars, etc. or to conduct them by yourself.
5. Ability to utilize computer software such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc. software programs.
6. Wiliness to become familiar with Oglala Lakota College policy and procedures.
7. Familiarity with Oglala Lakota College community service area.
8. Knowledge of Pine Ridge Reservations land base, history, culture philosophy, and language is an asset.
