Bergen Volunteers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Hackensack, NJ. We are seeking a Chief Executive Officer to lead our dynamic, growing organization. Our mission is to provide human service and training programs that improve lives and strengthen communities. Bergen Volunteers is a social service agency that assists vulnerable community members through various support programs. We are a vision driven team, building demand and urgency for our programs and services. We are seeking a candidate to assist in the continued implementation of our strategic plan, which aims for expansion and the establishment of consistent, sustainable funding sources.

Position Summary:

  • Provides executive leadership to the Board of Directors and staff, ensuring alignment with the agency's mission and objectives.
  • Develops and recommends policy and strategic direction to the Board and oversees its implementation.
  • Manages overall administration, including financial oversight, strategic planning, and risk management.
  • Acts as the chief representative of the agency to external stakeholders and is lead fundraiser focusing on foundation/government grants, public funding, and major individual gifts.

Position Requirements:

  • Demonstrated fundraising expertise.
  • Strong marketing and executive skills, including financial management knowledge and strategic planning experience.
  • Excellent communication skills: the ability to develop and manage relationships with diverse audiences.
  • Extensive network of professional and philanthropic relationships particularly at the local level.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience as a senior manager in a non-profit human services organization, or equivalent private-sector or government experience.
  • Strong record of effective staff management.
  • Commitment to developing and maintaining a culture of respect, learning, and integrity.
  • Evidence of a strong mission commitment

Major Duties:

Management and Administration

  • Provides executive oversight for the organization with overall responsibility for its management, administration, and strategic direction.
  • Directly hires and supervises staff responsible for the programmatic divisions within the agency.
  • Ensures that the agency has business, marketing, and operations plans to achieve its strategic goals and that its progress is monitored and evaluated.
  • Identifies and mitigates potential risks to the organization.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures to safeguard the agency's assets and reputation.
  • Promotes a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Ensures that staff have access to professional development opportunities and resources.

Development and Financial Oversight

  • Leads agency efforts to secure the financial resources necessary to achieve its mission.
  • Directly cultivates philanthropic support from major individual givers and corporations.
  • Leads efforts to secure grant and contract support from foundations and public entities.
  • Oversees the development and management of the agency's budget.
  • Ensures financial sustainability and accountability through rigorous financial management practices.

Strategic Planning and Innovation

  • Works directly with the Board to define strategic direction and develop and implement plans and programs to achieve its mission.
  • Fosters a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the organization.
  • Leads change management initiatives to adapt to evolving needs and challenges in the nonprofit sector.

External Relations and Community Engagement

  • Serves as chief spokesperson for the agency.
  • Represents the agency at the local, state, and national level through contact with and participation in organizations important to the ability of the agency to achieve its mission.
  • Enhances the agency’s visibility and reputation through active engagement with community stakeholders.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, and other nonprofits.

Board Relations

  • Ensures that the agency meets the highest standards of professional conduct by ensuring that a robust system of compliance and program evaluation is in place and the results of these reviews are shared with the Board of Directors.
  • Maintains a strong working relationship with the Board of Directors, providing them with timely updates on the organization's progress and challenges.
  • Prepares for and attends Board meetings, offering strategic insights and recommendations.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $120,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year

Ability to Commute:

  • Hackensack, NJ 07601 (Preferred)

Ability to Relocate:

  • Hackensack, NJ 07601: Relocate before starting work (Preferred)
