Job Summary

The HR Business Partner provides dedicated HR support to, and develops close working relationships with, assigned client areas working with Department Administrators and senior leadership collaboratively to understand and support their business objectives.

The HR Business Partner is the primary point of service for all faculty and professional staff in providing support, advice and counsel on all HR-related matters including, but not limited to, employee relations, organization change, performance management, compensation, equal employment opportunity, and talent acquisition/recruitment support.

Essential Functions

  • Assist clients with all aspects of workforce planning including: developing efficient and effective organizations, providing advice on proposed reorganizations and consolidations, and analyzing job descriptions to support the overall business need and strategic plan.
  • Provides guidance on a range of employee relations (ER) and labor relations issues. Educates clients on relevant policies, procedures, and practices as well as the legal implications of various decisions while ensuring compliance with federal, state(s) and local employment laws and University policies and procedures.
  • Primarily responsible for conducting employee and labor relations investigations. Works collaboratively with the Office of General Counsel, the Office of Equality and Diversity, and other stakeholders to recommend resolutions and interventions.
  • Provides a model for effective performance management, including proactive coaching as well as appropriate and effective strategies for managing disciplinary issues.
  • Support the talent strategy, succession planning and organizational design within assigned client areas.
  • Provides support and expertise regarding employee development, professional growth and career mobility within the University.
  • Analyze data trends and metrics; present information to executive leadership to inform business decisions.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate business relationships with assigned clients through open communication and regular attendance at client staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources colleagues to develop policies, programs, and solutions for use in assigned client areas and across the University.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of business experience in Human Resources or Organization Effectiveness, with strong understanding of a broad spectrum of HR functional areas including: total rewards and compensation, recruitment and retention, employee and labor relations, talent management (including performance management, learning and development), continuous process improvement, change management, diversity and inclusion, workforce planning, and organizational development.
  • Must have extensive employee relations experience including, but not limited to, coaching managers on the resolution of performance issues; the interpretation and application of HR policy and employment law; employee investigations; severance and termination proceedings.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and providing HR consultation to executive leaders in the strategic planning process and develops human resources strategies that support and align human resources strategy and client strategy.
  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain strong business relationships and the demonstrated ability to collaborate with all levels by building trust and credibility
  • Must have proven excellent customer support skills with demonstrated evidence of strong business acumen including the ability to understand the needs of the client and adjust services in accordance with those business needs and requirements.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to negotiate and influence others.
  • Must have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Higher Education and/or Academic Medical Center is strongly desired.
  • PHR or SPHR certification preferred.
  • Experience in Labor Relations preferred (grievances, arbitrations, understanding of CBA, etc).

Additional Information

This position is classified as exempt, grade M. Compensation for this grade ranges from $ 75,200.00 to $ 112,790.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
