Job Title: Sign Language Interpreter

Department: Disability Resources and Accessibility

Reports To: Director of Disability Resources

FLSA Status: Non-exempt, Part-time, Temporary

Job Code: E-1

 Summary: Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Disability Resources, provides sign language interpreting services for classroom and campus activities. The interpreter facilitates communication between hearing and deaf/hard of hearing individuals; serves as a liaison between deaf/hard of hearing students and hearing students, faculty, and staff; and performs related work as required. Position is part-time, as needed, and hours may fluctuate from semester to semester.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following:

 

  • Interpret or transliterate lectures, discussions, meetings, events, and other activities using manual sign system appropriate for the language and the cultural background of deaf/hard of hearing students and staff.
  • Accurately voice interpret deaf/hard of hearing students signs into fluent English for other students, faculty, and college staff.
  • Work effectively in teams with other sign language interpreters.
  • Maintain a high level of professional interpreter ethics.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Be sufficiently adaptable to accept a work schedule that is variable depending on student need.
  • Work the hours/shifts as assigned, and begin and end work on time.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

 Qualifications:

 Education and/or experience that demonstrates the following:

 

  • Demonstrate fluency in ASL/transliteration both receptively (sign-to-voice) and expressively (voice-to-sign).
  • Demonstrate ability to collaborate in team interpreting situations.
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.
  • Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of content areas in a variety of areas of study in higher education to provide accurate and meaningful interpretation/transliteration.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the standards and practices of service to students with disabilities in higher education.
  • Demonstrate ability to form and maintain professional relationships with students and faculty.
  • Demonstrate available to work hours specified by students schedules.
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to engage in professional development and maintain Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as required by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
  • Demonstrate ability to understand and practice the tenets of in the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.

 

Education and/or Experience:

Associates Degree (Bachelors preferred). Formal training in Sign Language Interpreting preferred. RID/NAD Certified (NIC, NIC-Adv., NIC-Master, CI/CT) or EIPA 4.0+ Certified. Two years of educational interpreting experience in higher education desired.

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from deaf/hard of hearing students, hearing students, faculty, and staff.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 Computer Skills:

Basic computer skills required.

 Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must be able to attain a Tennessee Drivers license.

 Other Skills and Abilities:

 Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 Considerable learned physical skill is required to perform sign language. Certain coordinated finger, limb, or body movements must be performed routinely in the course of regular work. Extended standing or sitting is required. Constant repetitive motion and mental processing may be required, which can lead to fatigue.

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and taste or smell.

 The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

 Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
