Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) is seeking a graduate assistant with a multimedia experience to join its communications team. The strongest candidate will have the flexibility of choosing either a 10- or 20-hour work week. During the summer, this can be extended to either 20 or 40 hours depending on the graduate assistant’s preference.
As part of the UMIACS communications team, the graduate assistant will have the opportunity to hone their multimedia skills while promoting research on a variety of technologies ranging from artificial intelligence, quantum, and cybersecurity, to linguistics, the microbiome sciences, and virtual and augmented reality.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
This position is only open to students enrolled in a  degree program as a full-time graduate student at the University of Maryland in good academic standing.

Knowledge, SKills and Abilities:
Eligible candidates will have strong skills in at least two of the four areas listed below. Please elaborate on these skills in your cover letter and include samples as indicated.
  • Websites: You have experience updating websites in Drupal, WordPress, and/or Squarespace. A strong background in coding is a plus. Eligible candidates will have strong skills in at least two of the four areas listed below. Please elaborate on these skills in your cover letter and include samples as indicated.
  • Video: You know how to operate a cinema-style camera to capture B-roll and interviews. (We currently have a Sony FX3 Full-frame Cinema Camera.) Include links to two videos that you’ve filmed with your application.
  • Writing: You have a strong background in writing about science or technology, and/or explaining complex topics for a layman’s audience. Include at least two writing samples with your application, preferably one news brief and one feature story.
  • Social Media: Experience using X, LinkedIn, and/or Facebook for professional purposes. Include three posts as samples with your application. Additional experience in analytics and/or developing social media strategies is a plus.
